Run Those Dogs - Deception Pass Park

You may have guessed it by now, but if not, I love Deception Pass Park! I have some incredible sessions there, and my session with Jennifer, owner of Run Those Dogs, was no exception.

Jen contacted me to do a photo session for her company to use for web site and social media usage. I was so on board! The date was set, Jen was bringing her dogs Gus and Kai, I arranged for a couple other dog models to join us. It was a go!

GUS - VP OF TOYS

Gus was adopted from The Noah Center in April of 2015. When I first laid eye’s on Gus he was laying on his back with a toy in his mouth, barely a year old. It was love at first sight! Gus keeps us on our toes daily with plenty of ball & frisbee time! He has been a true blessing to our home.

“The first time I saw Gus was April 1st 2017 while heading into Noah for my volunteer shift. It was two weeks after the sudden passing of our 4 year old boxer / pit mix named Lilo. My heart was scattered after losing Lilo. She had a cluster seizure disorder that started when she was 2. By the time she was 4 years old the seizures had worsened and we had to say goodbye as there was nothing we could do to help her.

So my heart was longing for another pup. When I saw Gus he was laying on his back with a stuffed hamburger in his mouth. SO happy to be in the warm shelter. Barely a year old he was the cutest pup!! ( he looked like a bear cub ) Gus was found roaming the streets of CA. No collar or micro chip. He was one of the many dogs brought to WA as the California shelters were to full.

I took gus out for a walk that day before he headed in to get neutered. I couldn’t stop thinking about him. I knew he’d be adopted as soon as he recovered from surgery. I had to act fast!! I talked my husband into going to see him the next day and of course we both feel in love ❤️

Gus was not properly socialized as a pup. He is very strong willed and does have barrier frustrations. Once offleash he’ll play with any dog that he see’s after a brief sniffing introduction.

We hired a trainer to work with us and what a difference that made! It took us a couple years really to fully get to learn how to manage his barrier frustrations and some anxieties about loud trucks and cars. There’s certain things he just doesn’t like. We’ve learned to redirect his behaviors and he’s learned what’s acceptable and what’s not . Gus is the smartest dog who’s always willing to please. As long as you give him a job to do then he’s a happy boy! Gus helped heal our broken hearts and I couldn’t love him more ❤️”

KAI - COMPANY PRINCESS

Kai was adopted from The Noah Center in February of 2016 just over a year old. She’s happiest when she’s out on a long trail run or riding around in the dog van with Mom, but her favorite time by far is snuggling on the couch at night with her family.

“By the time January 2018 hit I really wanted a friend for Gus. He needed a playmate badly! He was lonely during the day and I was tired of constantly entertaining him 😉

Again heading into Noah for my shift another volunteer was heading out to walk Kai ( then Stella ) I was like wait! I want to see this dog !! I followed her into the office where she was going to get spayed that day. She was scared, timid and just wanted someone to hold her. The vet tech said “ you have to have her! My husband won’t let me have another dog.. she SO sweet! “ I texted my husband a picture ( I’m sure he rolled his eyes ) and he once again entertained me by going to meet her. After the obstacle of Gus meeting her, it was a done deal!

Gus was not the least bit impressed with us bringing her home! He walked around with his hair up like a porcupine for the first 12 hours that she was home. Kai wanted nothing to do with him as he was being such a jerk! But then Gus finally gave in.. he dropped a toy by her feet, a

Peace offering and things got way better. Kai had to learn a few times not to poke the bear to hard or she’d get in trouble .. now days they snuggle, play and love each other . Kai is now the bitch of the family 😂 and Gus just takes it like a gentlemen . She would be happy just laying by the fireplace snuggling all day.. we did a DNA test on her she’s 30% heeler and 17% rat terrier.. she also has a lot of other breeds in her. She’s a super mutt! We love her ❣️”

JENNIFER SEWELL - OWNER

Hi, I’m Jen. For almost 21 years I worked in a job I loved, but one that didn’t fulfill me. I knew I needed to make a change and when I had the opportunity to move to the Seattle area, I took it! It was a bit intimidating leaping into the unknown, but I needed a challenge and this was definitely it. I had a lot of time to think about what was next when out on long mountain runs with my dog. I would always say “ I need to go Run the dog” trying to figure it all out. Then one day while out on a run in my HAPPY PLACE it came to me, so many people need this service! I love dogs and running… This is what I love!! And then the ideas started to flow. I looked up certification classes, went back to school and Run Those Dogs slowly came to life. It was the best decision I ever made and I couldn’t be happier.
